Alaa Mohammed’s Reflections on Her ASG Journey

Alaa Mohammed’s Reflections on Her ASG Journey

As part of the inHive network, members of the Alumni Steering Group (ASG) were invited to reflect on their journeys, their growth, and the impact they made along the way. Among them, Alaa Mohammed shared thoughtful insights that reveal a deep sense of purpose and commitment to community.

When Alaa first joined the ASG, she expected a structured leadership role with clear responsibilities. However, as she settled into the work, she came to realise that the experience was far more expansive. Being part of the leadership team offered her the opportunity to co-lead and help shape a collaborative environment where members felt supported and valued. Her sense of identity within the group evolved as she recognised the importance of shared purpose and collective effort.

Alaa’s understanding of leadership shifted significantly throughout her time in the ASG. She explained that leadership is not simply about working hard, but about working together. Her role taught her that effective engagement goes beyond gathering suggestions or exchanging ideas; it involves taking responsibility, helping others grow, and fostering an environment where every member feels capable of contributing. She found great fulfillment in sharing her skills and supporting others, a practice she believes strengthens the entire team.

Reflecting on moments that left a lasting impression, Alaa spoke about her interactions with underrepresented groups in the community. Listening to their stories opened her eyes to the challenges they face and deepened her sense of responsibility as an advocate. Understanding their lived realities strengthened her determination to highlight gaps and encourage solutions that respond directly to their needs.

One challenge Alaa identified was the limited opportunity to engage deeply with every ASG member. While she wished for more frequent interactions, she recognised that meaningful moments of connection arise in their own time. For her, what matters most is being fully present when those moments do occur, listening with intent, and valuing each conversation.

Alaa described the alumni network as special because of the strong sense of belonging it creates. For her, it is a community where shared experiences turn into lasting memories, and where members continuously support one another’s growth long after their programmes come to an end.

Looking ahead, Alaa offered words of encouragement for the next ASG leadership team. Even though she may never meet them in person, she expressed great trust in their abilities and their commitment to giving back to the community. She hopes they continue building on the foundation of unity and collaboration that has shaped the group so far, and she looks forward to celebrating their achievements as they evolve both individually and collectively.
