The Power of Voice and Vision: Lessons from Calisto’s ASG Experience

When Calisto first joined the Alumni Steering Group (ASG) as Secretary, he thought his role would be straightforward, keeping records, maintaining communication, and ensuring processes ran smoothly. But what he discovered was far deeper: the position was about connection, leadership, and amplifying the voices of others.

Over time, Calisto came to see leadership not as personal achievement, but as creating space for others to thrive. His proudest moments came during alumni exchanges, when diverse voices shared stories of community service and resilience. For him, these moments highlighted how powerful networks can be when experiences are documented, shared, and used to spark tangible change.

Of course, the journey wasn’t without challenges. Balancing ASG responsibilities with academic and professional demands tested his limits. Yet, it also sharpened his time management skills, taught him the value of prioritization, and reminded him of the importance of asking for support when needed.

What Calisto valued most, however, was the network itself. He describes it as a unique community bound by a shared mission, where members not only invest in their personal growth, but also work collectively toward community transformation. Across borders and backgrounds, the ASG fostered a genuine sense of belonging.

As he passes the baton to the next ASG leaders, Calisto offers this advice: “Leadership isn’t about authority, it’s about listening, documenting, and elevating voices. Your legacy will be defined by the change you enable and the people you empower.”

For Calisto, serving as Secretary was never just about minutes and memos. It was about building connections that last, amplifying voices that matter, and strengthening a network that continues to shape futures.
